Sweaty palms PDF Print E-mail
Question : My palms sweat very frequently. What causes it and how can I solve the problem?
Answer : Palmar hyperhydrosis or sweaty palms is a condition in which the sweat glands are overactive. The condition appears to be caused by overactivity of the sympathetic nervous system, which controls the amount of formation of sweat, among other functions.
Hyperhydrosis is frequently an inherited condition. There is no one cause, though possibilities range from genetic to hormonal changes, nerve damage, and of course, the most common, anxiety. Perhaps you should identify the underlying causes.
For decades, attempts at countering excessive sweating through alternative methods such as oral medications, acupuncture, anti-anxiety medication, herbal supplements and botox have been made. However, the only permanent solution has been surgery. This should not be resorted to without attempting alternative methods. You may consult your family doctor or a specialist to choose the right treatment.
You may try supplementing your diet with vitamins B2 and B6, biotin, choline bitartarate and inositol. Biotin, choline, and inositol together with lecithin are essential for a healthy nervous system and help the body to cope with stress and mild anxiety.
Since a sweaty palm may be caused by hormone imbalance, you should try taking evening primrose oil. Some patients have found that evening primrose oil supplementation is effective in controlling over-active sweat glands. Studies have shown gamma linolenic acid (GLA) in evening primrose oil helps regulate the hormone system.
