Irritated by mouth ulcers PDF Print E-mail
Question : I TEND to have mouth ulcers every now and then. For instance, I had one on the right side of the mouth a couple of weeks ago and now have another on the left. How can I prevent this from happening?

Answer : MOUTH ulcers can be triggered by viral and bacteria infection, stress, food allergies, nutrient deficiencies, hormonal imbalances and irritation from brushing teeth.

They may result from an abnormal immune response to normal bacteria in mouth. Thus, adding friendly bacteria such as Lactobacillus NCFM, Lactobacillus LAS, Bifidobacterium BB12 into your daily regimen can help restore the balance of friendly bacteria in the gut. This plays a protective role in the prevention of canker sores.

You may include spirulina in your diet as deficiencies of iron, lysine, vitamin B12 and folic acid have been associated with this disorder in some people. B vitamins are basic for immune function and healing.

Keep your mouth clean by brushing your teeth and rinsing your mouth after meals and at bedtime. Clean the sore spots with a cotton swab dipped in equal parts water and hydrogen peroxide.

You may opt for a soft toothbrush to minimise irritation to the sensitive tissues affected by mouth ulcers.

Your toothpaste may be the culprit, if you have recurrent mouth ulcers. Try a toothpaste that does not contain the detergent sodium lauryl sulfate.

Relaxation techniques such as aromatherapy can be a helpful in both treatment and prevention as mouth ulcers may be related to stress.

Eat plenty of salads with raw onions. Onions contain sulphur and have healing properties. Avoid sugar, citrus fruits, processed and refined foods or any other foods that you know may trigger these sores
